It’s starting to get dark early now, and in just a few weeks, we’ll be off daylight savings time. Don’t fret though — look for ways to celebrate the dark, such as the annual Family Campfire Night at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes.

It’s an evening of activities including a night hike, storytelling and skits about the Nature Center’s founding 50 years ago when the Shaker Lakes area had been threatened with bulldozing to create a highway. It will also feature a live bat presentation with Jeff Riebe from the Cleveland Metroparks, so if bats creep you out, be warned! It’ll be show and tell, as Riebe talks about how bats benefit the environment and what we can do to protect them.

Refreshments? Of course. And what would you have at a campfire besides s’mores? They’ll provide the ingredients and the kids (and you) can have the messy fun of assembling them. There’ll also be hot apple cider to wash them down. Bring sticks to roast the marshmallows. And don’t forget your folding chair.

Admission is $5 or $25 for a family of up to six members.

To register call 216-321-5935 or go to shakerlakes.org.
