Forty years ago, the contentious and misbegotten Vietnam War came to an end, even though some still debate its validity and outcome — and grieve the lives lost — today. Saigon, the capital of U.S. ally South Vietnam, fell to the Viet Cong of North Vietnam in April as American troops and civilians and thousands of Vietnamese fled, leaving behind a battered country.

Since then, it’s rebounded, with a rapidly growing economy and declining poverty. Harriet Applegate, executive secretary of the North Shore AFL-CIO and Anne Hill, director of local government relations for the Metrohealth System, visited Vietnam this year during its celebration of the 40th anniversary of the war’s end. They’ll be talking about the changes in the country, what its people are like and the lingering effects of Agent Orange, a toxic herbicide used during the war to defoliate forests and jungles and deprive opposing forces of cover at a program at Peace House in University Circle, sponsored by Women Speak Out for Peace and Justice.

It’s free and open at all.
