More and more people are connecting care for the environment with lifting up the poor and addressing global hunger, especially since Pope Francis has been traveling and talking how these issues are intertwine. The Cleveland Council on World Affairs and Oxfam America will take on the subject in a forum at the Breen Center in Ohio City that will focus on the power of small farmers to fight hunger around the world.

“These farmers are receiving growing attention from policymakers around the world because a small investment in smallholder farmers can transform an entire community. In the recently adopted United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the influential work of smallholder farmers will be showcased as a critical part of cracking hunger worldwide,” they say, pointing out that addressing hunger will be part of the critical Paris climate change negotiations in December.

The speakers for the program are Doris Ikpeze, economic justice and gender officer for Oxfam Nigeria, who coordinates the GROW Campaign for food justice and Nigeria’s Female Food Hero project, and Gawain Kripke, director of policy and research at Oxfam America.

The program starts at 5:30 with a reception with a cash bar. The program begins at 6, followed by a Q&A sessions at 6:45. Admission is $25 or $15 for CCWA members; it’s $5 for full-time students.
