Cleveland Cartoonist Derf Previews New Graphic Novel ‘Trashed’ at Coventry’s B-Side Lounge

Cleveland comics artist John “Derf” Backderf has been beloved by many Clevelanders since he debuted his comic strip “The City” in a local alternative newspaper back in the late 1980s, mocking self-absorbed local characters such as the mall rats who were rife at the time.

Eventually the strip was syndicated in nearly 150 papers across the country but it was his 2012 graphic novel My Friend Dahmer, about his high school friendship with future serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, that really put him on the map.

He brought the curtain down on “The City” last year to focus on producing more graphic novels. His latest, Trashed, based on his summer job as a garbage collector while he was in college, will come out in early November.

But if you want an advance peek, he’ll have a launch party at the B-Side Lounge on Coventry sponsored by Coventry independent bookstore Mac’s Backs. He’ll do a slide show presentation on the making of the book, a Q&A and a book signing, with boks made available early by special arrangement with his publisher, Abrams Books.  The event is free.
