When Mary Verdi-Fletcher, who was born with spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, founded Dancing Wheels — a professional dance company which features both “sit-down” dancers in wheelchairs and “stand-up” dancers — a lot of people scratched their heads. There hadn’t been such a “physically integrated” dance ensemble before and it took some getting used to.

But that was 35 years ago, and the company has become nationally known, winning numerous honors and accolades and tons of media coverage. They’re celebrating their anniversary with a program at PlayhouseSquare’s Allen Theatre called Lasting Legacy. The program will honor the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago, reflecting on its five core areas: employment, education, transportation, communication and public access.

Tickets range from $17 for a student ticket to $50 for a VIP ticket, and of COURSE there is accessible seating.
