Scandinavian Trio The Thing Blends Indie Rock & Free Jazz @BopStopTMS

The Thing

Wed 9/30 @ 8PM

Cleveland promotion company New Ghosts was formed early this year to bring in the sort of avant-garde free jazz that doesn’t have wide appeal. But that doesn’t mean everything they book is totally without touch points for the average open-minded listener.

Scandanavian trio The Thing, formed in 1999, is influenced by rock as well as free jazz and offer their own distinctive takes on tunes by contemporary indie rock artists like the White Stripes, P.J. Harvey and Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman. Oh yeah, they play bass, drums and sax — no guitars.

They include sax/electronics player Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilsson-Love, who seems to be in about a hundred bands and was at the Beachland last month with his duo with reeds player Ken Vandermark.

They’ll perform at the Bop Stop. Tickets are $20.
