If you and your spouse — or daughter or brother — have been talking for years about wanting to own a farm, and you find your conversations getting more practical and your research getting more serious, maybe it’s time for you to sign up for the Countryside Conservancy’s series of classes “Exploring the Small Farm Dream,” taking place every Tuesday in October.

The course looks at farming as a small business and leads the participants through goal-setting, acquiring needed resources and management. Speakers will include those who have been there, done that — who are running successful farms. And the course will also include a tour of the Trapp Family Farm, one of the restored farmsteads in Cuyahoga Valley National Park that the Countryside Initiative has leased to agricultural entrepreneurs.

They explain, “Exploring the Small Farm Dream is designed for anyone who has thought about starting a small farm or agriculture business. This may include people thinking about a career change to start a farm, taking over an existing farm business, farming part-time while continuing other employment, or developing an informal agricultural pastime into a business activity.”

And for those who decide it’s not for them, the course explores other ways to be involved in agriculture.

Registration is $100 per person, or $150 for two people looking at farming together. Go here for more info or to register.
