Dark Jittery Trio @AlgiersMusic Headlines Sonic Sessions Concert @Rock_Hall

SonicSessionsAlgiers

Wed 10/7 @ 9PM

The trio Algiers takes its influences from an unusual variety of sources including Afrofolk, post-punk, jazz, electronic music and gospel, as well as the distinctively gloomy mood of Southern Gothic literature that was in the air around their native Atlanta.

While all three members — vocalist/guitarist Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan and guitarist Lee Resche left Atlanta to pursue graduate degrees in Europe, they carried the spirit of the American south, with its fraught politics of race, religion, economics and social status. Those tensions fill their work, both musically and lyrically. It’s dark, jittery and makes artful use of contrasting open sonic space and claustrophobic noise

Although formed in 2007, Algiers released its first full-length album just this past June when heritage indie Matador put out its self-titled album. They’re perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Music on the lobby stage as part of its Sonic Sessions series introducing intriguing buzz bands — and this one is really intriguing. Cleveland’s Lives of the Saints open.

Tickets are $5.50.
