If there’s one thing that defines CoolCleveland readers, beyond age, race, income, gender, sexual preference, beyond even psychographics, it’s their willingness to participate in their community. CoolCleveland is simply their favorite tool for finding out what they want to get involved in each week.

Looking to get your hands dirty? Mansfield Frazier can use some help with the abundant harvest at his breakthrough Vineyards & Biocellar at Chateau Hough this Sat, and you might walk away with a rare bottle of the famous urban grape. Ingenuity is lining up volunteers now for their Oct event. Wanna make art history? Join our workshop at SPACES and help us archive performance art.

Kids can get involved with Healthy Kids Challenge Day at CMNH, and the whole family can join Believe in CLE at the giant free yoga sesh at the NC Harbor. Music is a participatory sport when done well, and this week you can mesh with musicians from the Revolution Brass Band to Mary Bridget Davies to Jivviden to Hillbilly Idol to Charlie Musslewhite to the Stumpy Valley Volunteers.

Art-making your thing? Walk All Over Waterloo has all that, plus a “Salute to Summer” block party with Jake Kelly’s first major show, new art shops, outdoor music, and a closed-off street for peds, bikes, boards and blades. If your favorite end-of-summer activity leans more towards books, check out the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, and come out to support Guide To Kulchur’s new expanded location in Gordon Square.

If it’s time to get serious and be involved in a life-changing internship, then CoolCleveland might be ready for you. Mansfield suggests you put your foot down and boycott one of our local TV stations for their shameful (non) coverage of the important stuff happening in the region. Cleveland Gets Booked

The annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, taking place Thu 9/10 at PlayhouseSquare, turn the eyes of the book world to Cleveland. It also means performances around town by the year’s winners, such as poet Jericho Brown (pictured), who will be reading from his work at Trinity Cathedral. Hear the award-winning words come alive. VIDEO: Riding High in the Cleveland Metroparks

As they ready for a ride, Cleveland Metroparks Chief Operating Officer Joe Roszak updates CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready on all the latest cool projects they’ve been busy with: building mountain bike trails, collaborating with regional park systems, organizing the incredible NEOcycle urban cycling festival, and their designation as a Gold Medal Finalist for the National Recreation and Parks Association.

Joining them on the ride are folks from the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Bike Cleveland, CAMBA, Ray’s MTB, and the City of Medina.

Words From the Underground

The tiny Gordon Square bookstore Guide to Kulchur has been a hub for underground literary projects for several years now, with retail sales, a small press, public events and a “Books 2 Prisoners” project. With so much going on, it’s outgrown the space and it’s expanding into one up the block (It will still use the old space). As G2K prepares its grand opening party, CoolCleveland’s John Benson learns about its plans for the future. Fri 9/4.

Ursuline Announces Line Up for TEDxUrsuline Event

Chances are if you’re reading our newsletter, you’ve heard of Ted Talks. However, if you’re still in the dark, Ted Talks are online lectures that aim to broadcast “ideas worth sharing.” Check out a talk happening locally, hosted by Ursuline College, at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage on Fri 10/23 @ 1PM – 5PM.

CoolCleveland met up with Ursuline’s Katherine Jackson to announce who’s officially speaking this year. Among the six amazing participants is highlight Carl Wilkens, the only American to stay behind in Rwanda during genocide. See him, along with other greats, at this year’s TedxUrsuline event.

A Unique Vision

Cleveland started to notice the work of artist Jake Kelly 15 years ago when flyers he did for shows at the Grog Shop and Beachland started appearing around town, telling little stories that may or may not have had anything to do with the band. Since then, he’s expanded his scope, creating posters and murals for Melt Bar & Grilled, graphic novels, zines and decorated upcycled furniture. He’ll have his first major show in a decade at Waterloo’s Gallery One Sixty with an opening reception during Walk All Over Waterloo. Fri 9/4.

A New Awareness

Yoga is not merely a physical exercise but a pathway to mindfulness and a greater appreciation of the world around us. That appreciation — specifically of what Cleveland has to offer — is the mission of Believe in CLE. It’s sponsoring a giant free yoga session at the Northcoast Harbor outside the Rock Hall to help people get in touch with their inner selves and with the city. What a spectacular way to kick off the holiday weekend. Ignore the airshow planes flying overhead. Fri 9/4.

Volunteer!

Be part of something cool. You may have heard about Chateau Hough which grows wine grapes in the middle of the city. Those grapes are ripe now, and Chateau Hough needs pickers. Come down, spend a few hours and get to taste some of the wine made from these grapes on Sat 9/5.

* Also seeking volunteers: the annual festival of creativity, Ingenuity Cleveland, at North Coast Harbor Fri 10/2-Sun 10/4. Jobs range from pre-event construction to greeting and running errands during the event. Go to Ingenuity’s volunteer page to sign up.

Food Trucks, Vendors and… Sewers?

This isn’t your average festival: this is the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District Open House. Held on Sat 9/19 @ 9AM-4PM at the Environmental and Maintenance Services Center, NEORSD is opening their doors and letting visitors tour their Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant and lab, play games, conduct hands-on experiments and much more. All free of charge, and good fun for family and friends.

Seeing a sewer’s inner workings not cool enough? See our lab behind the scenes, explore the Metroparks NatureTracks mobile exhibit, learn from workshops and register for cost-saving programs, and enjoy Cleveland’s favorite food trucks, games and treats. So get ready to get your hands dirty, and to learn what happens after the flush.

Fitness and Fun

Kids need to be healthy to learn and grow strong. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History makes that into a fun game with its Healthy Kids Challenge Day where kids can win prizes for visiting stations to participate in activities about exercise and eating well. Put down that video game and get moving! Sat 9/5.

Too Busy to Eat Healthy? Nature’s Bin Can Help!

Where is this nation going in terms of food? Find out the answer to that question and many more when you attend Nature’s Bin’s “State of the Union” on healthy eating at the University of Akron in Lakewood on Wed 9/9 @ 7PM.

Hosted by Amy Jamieson-Petonic, a specialized dietitian, the free lecture will cover where we are today in terms of health, wellness and making better choices to live a healthy life. CoolCleveland met up with Jamieson-Petonic and got the scoop. Check out the video, attend the lecture, and walk away with a life changing action plan.

If spending the holiday cooking burgers on a grill isn’t your thing, head down to Little Italy for La Dolce Vita Bistro’s Peaches & Wine Summer Harvest Party. Not only will there be peaches and wine, but also pastas and pizzas made with tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, onions and basil from local gardens and farms. Mon 9/7.

Its official name is “The Great Geauga County Fair,” and this late-season fair lives up to the word “great.” At nearly 200 years, it’s Ohio’s oldest fair, and it packs the fairgrounds in Burton with more of everything that makes a county fair an occasion — exhibits, animals, food, entertainment and, of course, demolition derbies. This month’s Walk All Over Waterloo art walk includes several new shows, some continuing shows and a chance to check out the street’s new art-related businesses. While this year’s 11th Congressional District Labor Day parade is sure to be a little sad this year, since it was started by Lou Stokes who died August 18, the huge annual gathering of labor unions, community groups, high school bands, fraternal organizations, elected officials and others walking down Kinsman Road is a tribute to his influence.

Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli has made a career of covering and writing traditional pop ballads and turning contemporary songs into material for his jazz-inflected pop style. Boycott Channel 5

When I turned on the news, at 5pm to watch the coverage on the day Louis Stokes was laid to rest I was shocked, disgusted and outraged by WEWS Channel 5. I sometimes have more than one news broadcast…

* Free Apples That’s Marvin standing under “our” apple tree. I say “our” but it’s really not since it’s on a public city tree lawn across the street from the vineyard we spend our days tending….

* A Fool’s Errand If the allegations in the killing of Harris County, TX Deputy Darren Goforth prove to be true, Shannon Jaruay Miles, the 30-year-old black man who stands accused of shooting….
