Singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli is known for his elegant mid-20th century style of jazz/pop balladry, both in the tunes he’s written and the ones he covers.

He’s tackled Duke Ellington standards, as well as tunes associated with balladeers like Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole. On his 2013 album Double Exposure, he did lightly swinging versions of compositions by Joni Mitchell, Seals & Crofts, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello and even the Allman Brothers (their instrumental “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”). But he hinted at his jazz roots here and there by injecting themes from Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn, Lee Morgan, and Joe Henderson.

On his new album, he returns to another composer whose work he’s touched on in the past: Paul McCartney. In 1998, on his album John Pizzarelli Meets The Beatles, he did Lennon/McCartney. The new one, Midnight McCartney, comprises a dozen covers of post-Beatles McCartney tunes including “Silly Love Songs,” “Maybe I’m Amazing” and “My Love” featuring his legendary 89-year-old father, jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, on rhythm guitar. Pizzarelli’s press says McCartney himself suggested the idea to Pizzarelli who played on McCartney’s 2012 standards album, Kisses on the Bottom.

That album comes out on Concord Records on 9/11, the day after Pizzarelli winds up two nights — four shows — at Nighttown, where he’ll be performing with his quartet. But we wouldn’t be surprised if he brings some copies with him.

Tickets are $40.
