In 1987, trumpet/composer/educator Wynton Marsalis founded the jazz program at Lincoln Center that became Jazz at Lincoln Center – and the rest is history. The New Orleans native has probably done more than any individual to keep jazz in the public eye. And while some find him a little too traditional and unadventurous, there’s no denying that that the nine-time Grammy winner has brought new generations of listeners and performers to the music with a multitude of programs aimed at both.

And on the 10th anniversary of Katrina, it’s worth noting that he used his considerable fame and clout to fuel the city’s — and especially the music community’s — rebirth.

Marsalis brings Jazz at Lincoln Center to northeast Ohio for two performances. The first, at Severance Hall Friday night, will feature the ensemble by itself playng music by Marsalis and other jazz greats.

For the second, at Blossom Music Center Saturday night, they’ll be joined by the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Williams Eddins. There they’ll play Marsalis’ Swing Symphony who incorporates a variety of jazz, gospel and pop styles in a classical context — something else Marsalis is knowledgeable about and trained in.

Tickets range from $32-$126.
