Jazz pianist Manuel Valera is based in New York, but he’s got Cuba in his blood. Born and raised in Havana, the 34-year-old musician arrived in the U.S. in 2000 to attend NYC’s New School. Since then, he’s made the most of the city’s bustling jazz scene but he’s continued to mix Afro-Cuban influences with jazz, funk and R&B ones. He’s earned extensive recognition for his fusion sound; his 2012 album New Cuban Express was nominated for Best Latin Jazz recording.

He’s performed and recorded in various configurations from solo piano (his 2014 recording Self Portrait) to combos of various sizes, including a string quartet. When he comes to Cleveland to perform at Nighttown, he’ll be bringing an all-star quartet of New York musicians he’s dubbed the Groove Square Quartet. In addition to himself, it features John Ellis on sax, Orlando LeFleming on bass and EJ Strickland on drums.

Tickets are $20.
