MOCA’S The Beat Uptown series continues with two of the area’s many excellent original bands: Cities & Coasts and Midnight Passenger.

Cities & Coasts is a project of local musician Nathan Hedges, with a lush, warm sound inspired by bands like the Beach Boys and their “symphonic pop” spawn. Its album, Postcards from the Great Lakes, displays its summery, melodic rock to good advantage. Hedges is assisted by a cast of stellar Cleveland players so you never know who might be lending a hand.

Midnight Passenger has been kicking around the area for a decade, but only released their first full-length album Calypso earlier this year. It has the intense, driving melodicism that has propelled bands from U2 to Psychedelic Furs to Coldplay, with Tony Zaro’s tremulous, acrobatic tenor adding another level of urgency to the songs.

The show takes place on Toby’s Plaza outside MOCA. There’s no cover.
