Blues-Based Cle Quartet Jivviden Releases Cassette EP @Beachland Tavern

Fri 9/4 @ 9PM

Jivviden is fairly new to the area’s music scene but they’ve been busy getting their music out. They’ve been cropping up on bills at clubs across town for the past couple of years, and last year they released their debut album, Slow Commotion.

Currently a quartet featuring Matthew Sikon on vocals and rhythm guitar, Joseph Wolfe on lead guitar, Brandon Tonti on bass and Steve Kessler on percussion (they used to have an organ player but they’ve stripped down to a foursome, the young band makes music based on old folk blues. Their sound is sparse and economical for a four-piece without any superfluous ornamentation, topped by Sikon’s pinched, keening, old-soul vocals. But they’re hardly strict traditionalists. While some tracks, like “Old Medicine” and “Slum Blues,” show their roots in country blues, others delve into blues rock (the hypnotic “Druggies’ Moan”), indie folk (“Lame Snake Dream”), jagged indie rock (Fuck South Dakota”) and surf music (the pensive, reverb-drenched instrumental “Head Honcho.”)

Jivviden is working on new material and a new release. But in the meantime, they’re fueling interest with the release of an EP called Rough Brew Demos featuring six tracks they’re working on for the upcoming album. It’ll be released as a limited edition cassette with a digital download code, which, like their music, encompasses old-school and contemporary.

They’ll have it available at the release show at the Beachland Ballroom where Bad Hounds and Fever Child will open. Admission is $7.
