Good things come in pairs. Or, they should. Or, if you see something good, you should grab another one.

78th Street Studios is blowing up since Derek Hess was one of its first pioneers, and now he’s back. Just like that. Take one thing and turn it into another. That’s the theory behind the Cleveland Furniture Bank’s upcycing workshop at Southland. That’s kinda the theory behind Cleveland these days.

Bring together bicycles and art, and you’ve got two events: a public talk and a ride showcasing public art in the Heights. Remember the Spring Seed Swap last April? Now reap what’s been sown at the R/S Summer Harvest Fest. Get ready to fuse fire & water at Lorain’s new FireFish festival. A vegan diet and protein? They go together like Cocktails and Canvas, which consists of – you guessed it – drinking and painting. Koreans Jinjoo Cho, violin, and HyunSoo Kim, piano, close out Holden’s summer concert series.

Is summer over? If you’re headed back to school, CoolCleveland is looking for interns to help unite your vocation and avocation. You really can do both. –Thomas Mulready

Derek Hess is one of Cleveland’s most talented, hardworking & provocative artists — and his work was regularly featured at the 78th Street Studios when it was just on the cusp of being cool. Now he and manager Marty Geramita are opening a gallery/workspace there devoted to showcasing Hess’ now internationally known work to hometown art fans. It kicks off with a book signing at the next 78th Street Studios artwork. Fri 8/21.

Cleveland Heights is one of the area’s most art-packed communities, with more artists per capita than virtually anyplace else in NE Ohio. So it’s no surprise there’s a lot of public art to see. It’s also an active community with lots of cyclists. So nonprofit Heights Arts has combined the two: there’ll be a talk at its gallery Thursday and a bike tour of outdoor art Saturday. Thu 8/20 & Sat 8/22.

Baldwin Wallace University’s Conservatory’s dream of going all Steinway has almost come to fruition. With 87 new Steinways already rushed into the conservatory in less than a year, BWU is now only one piano away from their goal. The prestige, which has only been merited to twelve other conservatories, will not only help improve the quality of students’ education, but it will also help boost enrollment.

Susan Van Vorst, the Conservatory’s Dean, met up with CoolCleveland to fill us in on their newly launched crowd funding campaign. Do your part, and help fund the BW Con’s last $5,000 dollars!

Northeast Ohioans love the arts. But they’re sure to REALLY love the new festival, FireFish, which debuts in downtown Lorain in September. The one-day event celebrates the arts and the region’s relationship to water through a series of performances and displays by local artists, taking place at rooftops, alleys and abandoned buildings. What’s really special is that some will incorporate spectacular displays of pyrotechnics. Sat 9/26.
