Native Cleveland jazz trumpet Dominick Farinacci, now based in New York, returns to his hometown this week, for a couple of gigs.

On Thursday night his quintet will kick off the 36th annual Tri-C JazzFest at PlayhouseSquare’s Palace Theatre on a double bill with the spectacular 19-piece John Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with special guests, multiple Grammy-winning vocal group Take 6.

Farinacci’s career was launched through Tri-C JazzFest when, as part of its teen program, he was spotted by Wynton Marsalis, who recommended him to be part of the first class in Juilliard’s brand-new jazz program, which he attended on full scholarship. Since then, he’s released eight albums and has traveled around the world performing and advocating for jazz and music education.

Tickets are $40-$65.

Then on Friday, he’ll head down to Akron where he’ll perform in the more casual environment of Blu Jazz with pianist Richard Johnson, bassist Barry Stephenson, drummer Lawrence Leathers, percussionist Jamey Haddad and vocalist Gregory Generet.

He’ll do two sets; tickets are $20.
