Singer/songwriter/guitarist Roger Hoover has been kicking around the northeast Ohio music scene for something like a decade. His gritty vocals, bearing traces of iconic unpolished singers like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, and his hard-luck, heartbreak songs worked equally well in the context of his bands the Whiskeyhounds and the Magpies and in solo performances.
Though his music, showcased on five albums, has attracted admirers, Hoover’s professional journey has been erratic and he hasn’t been that high profile lately. But he’s working on new music and he’s based himself in Kent. That’s where he’s starting a weekly residency at the Venice Cafe on Tuesdays through 8/25 to work out some musical ideas in public that he’s planning to record in the fall.
