Despite the U.S.’s more than five-decade blockade of Cuba, ended late last year by President Obama, Americans have long been aware of the vibrant musical culture that country has continued to produce. Despite obstacles, many Cuban musicians and bands have performed in the U.S. and adventurous Americans have found ways to travel there to enjoy the culture.
Miguel Cuni Jr. plays Cuban son, a form of music that, like so much about Cuba, combines Spanish and African elements. he inherited his affinity for the music from his father, the noted son musician Miguelito Cuni, developing in his own way as a percussionist and vocalist. Like his father, he has travelled all over the world sharing Cuba’s musical history along with its contemporary sounds.
He’s in the U.S. this summer to share the music of his latest project, Son Para Siempre, featuring classic son tunes from the ’40s and ’50s, and to play at festivals and other venues with American musicians such as pianist Max Mulready (pictured with Cuni above). He’ll play a quickie gig at the Root Cafe in Lakewood on Wed 7/22, then hit two major festivals coming up: the Latino Arts & Celebration festival at the Cleveland Municipal Parking Lot on Sat 8/1 and the Cleveland World Festival at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on Sun 8/2.
