For more than 30 years, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra has been enlisting some of the area’s best musicians to perform compositions and arrangements for larger ensembles. It’s combined the talents of young and veteran musicians, and that shows up in its outgoing and incoming artistic directors. Young trumpeter Sean Jones stepped down after five years and after a national search, CJO decided to tap long-time band member and director of the jazz studies program at Case Western Reserve University since 1988, trombonist Paul Ferguson.

Before kicking off their 2015-2016 season 9/12 at PlayhouseSquare, the group will squeeze into Nighttown for an evening of music, featuring Cleveland jazz/R&B vocalist Evelyn Wright (pictured).

Tickets are $25.
