Take Flight

Now that summer’s finally here, don’t let it slip by. Make a plan and go for it. Become intuitive. Don’t think too hard. Turn off your mind and soar upstream.

To help kids find their wings, do the 5K at one of the best zoos in the world and support Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you haven’t experienced the Ohio Light Opera, their short season is just beginning, so don’t miss your shot. If you’re in the mood to laugh, there’s high-flying comedy this week. If not, convergence-continuum will have you thinking about your own mortality. Hey, every journey’s got to come to an end sometime.

Pilot your own expedition by navigating below: get on board with NEO’s finest commentator Mansfield Frazier as he maneuvers murder, hate, guns, drugs, death, and forgiveness, and it’s not necessarily a joyride; hang on tight as our Soundbite Laureate drives home his STEManifesto for reforming education; if you’d rather march than ride, come together at the Pride Parade and Festival; bid adieu as Apollo’s Fire plays some farewell concerts before wowing Tanglewood and the Proms; soak up the value of water at Chautauqua in Chagrin; get “vegucated” on how to eat vegan with a free dinner & film; the hit parade keeps rolling as Anne E. DeChant and The Modern Electric each unveil new releases; grab the night flight to AsiaTown’s new after-hours street markets and take wing past sunset.

Still feeling grounded? We can help: our re-launched mobile apps will let you fly through all the CoolNeighborhoods in our region, including North Collinwood/Waterloo, our focus this week. Give your career a lift with a summer internship you’ll never forget. The uber-popular CoolCleveland Festival Calendar will keep you soaring all summer long. –Thomas Mulready

Ohio Light Opera has been offering summer repertory seasons packed full of musical entertainment for 37 years. Despite its name, musicals and operettas are its real bread-and-butter with shows like the Broadway classic Brigadoon, Kurt Weill’s One Touch of Venus and Cole Porter’s Can Can, all company premieres. And of course, there’s Gilbert & Sullivan with Yeoman of the Guard. The seven productions run simultaneously through Sat 8/8.

Let your creativity take flight this weekend by strolling the streets of Waterloo. While you’re out there, find some of our favorites like Blue Arrow Records, Loren Naji’s Satellite Gallery, Waterloo Arts, or our friends over at Zygote’s Ink House. Don’t stop there! There’s plenty of other great spots to hit up while in the neighborhood, so see it for yourself.

There’s never a better time than now! See what’s up in the neighborhood by attending the Waterloo Arts Fest on Sat 6/27 @ 12:00pm; but before you go, check out the North Collinwood/Waterloo Neighborhood Page for more permanent listings of restaurants, galleries and other cool destinations.

Kick off your weekends right, with the Metroparks’ Euclid Beach Live happening every Friday night from 5:30PM – 8:30PM until Fri 8/21 at Euclid Beach Park. The event, similar to the ever popular Edgewater Live, features live music, food trucks, family activities, and corn hole.

CoolCleveland’s Marty Bielat met up with Metroparks’ Tom Robatin to get the details. Robatin said he loved Euclid Beach Live for its wide variety of cultural music performances, smaller venue, and of course, the beautiful sunsets over looking Lake Erie. Come check it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.
