Hitting 100

Let’s have some fun. How about we put the pedal down and see how fast this mother can go. To help you out, we’ve relaunched our free mobile apps for Apple and Android.

Speaking of moms, they’re invited to Pump & Dump & laugh a bit. Bring the guys: they can relate. We’ll see you at MOCA as they show us How To Remain Human. And Karamu House hits 100 as the oldest African-American theatrer in the country. Still thriving, and still going as fast as they can.

The Balboa is back with Get Hep Swing, WOW kicks off a summer of fun, Startup Scaleup hits the ground running at Gordon Square, and we offer offer a whole list of free fun for kids of any speed. Our beaches are buzzing with the weekly Edgewater Live and Euclid Beach Live, thanks to the Metroparks.

If you’re ready to see how fast your own speedometer goes, try a CoolCleveland internship. Seriously, what’s the worst that could happen? And don’t miss our video sneak peek of Cleveland’s most amazing live/work studio ever. This one’s off the chart. –Thomas Mulready

Known as the oldest African-American theater in the U.S., Karamu House has been working since 1915 to unite people of all races and walks of life in the common cause of the arts while producing quality art. With artistic director Terrence Spivey leading its theater, it’s enjoying a flourishing period.

It’s celebrating 100 years with a benefit dinner at the Cleveland Museum of Art Sat 6/13 and a special one-night performance of Samm-Art Williams’ Home Mon 6/15. Check out its upcoming 2015-2016 season.

The Balboa, a relative of swing dancing, swept Southern California in the ’30s and ’40s. Swing has had a revival, but it took Clevelander Valerie Salstrom of Get Hep Swing to pull the Balboa from the brink of oblivion. She launched her All-Balboa weekends in 2001; they now attract more than 500 participants from around the world for four days of classes, social dancing to live bands and competition.

Both beginners and experts can be part of the event, which takes place at the Independence Holiday Inn with its 8,000 square foot ballroom, from Thu 6/11-Sun 6/14.

Explore themed gardens, protected forests and serene hiking trails, now into the evening hours.

The Holden Arboretum is open until 9pm on Tuesdays with reduced $5 admission after 5PM through August. For information visit HoldenArb.org.

A lot of comedy is aimed at guys who bond over its crude jokes. Shana Ferm and Tracey Tee take it in another direction entirely. Their Pump and Dump Comedy show mines humor from parenthood. While moms are their main audience, they say anyone who’s hung out with kids should get a few chuckles.

They’ll be performing their show one night only at Pickwick & Frolic’s Hilarities Thu 6/11.

The best place to read in the city, the CPL’s Eastman Reading Center, just got an upgrade. With the newest instiallation in CPL and LAND Studio’s See Also Series: Andréa Keys Connell’s “Migration,” the outdoor garden has been transformed into a literary wonderland with ceramic statues representing characters from CPL’s extensive collection of novels.

CoolCleveland met up with Connell to get her insights on the project. Virginia-based Connell discussed her love for the library, and for the greater Ohio community. Experience the awe and wonder for yourself when the project becomes open to the public on Fri 6/12.

The word spectacular is overused these days. But there’s simply no other word to describe this incredible 7000 square foot live/work studio in Cleveland’s AsiaTown and Superior Arts Neighborhood.

Photographer Keith Berr built a world-class photo studio, and partner Linda Barberic runs her specialty tea business out of this fabulous mixed-use space that comes complete with guest bedrooms, a luxurious master suite, a custom chef’s kitchen, enclosed parking for 12, indoor garage, a delightful garden with pergola, and enough space to throw a party for 250.

Interested? You might want to move quickly, as dozens of realtors were walking through the studio the day we shot this video. Contact: Linda@KeithBerr.com.

Find Out at Ursuline!

Going green seems to be a hot topic these days in Cleveland, and Ursuline College is certainly throwing their hat into the ring. The college has recently announced a Sustainability and Spirituality Online Graduate Certificate Program that will teach students an interfaith global perspective on sustainability.

The project-based curriculum will give students first-hand experiences to analyze local organizations that are making a push for change. The program’s director, Dr. Elizabeth E. Meacham, met up with CoolCleveland to shine light on a prime example of this progress, First Unitarian Church’s Rev. Daniel Budd. Check out the video!

Gordon Square is one of Cleveland’s rising neighborhoods, thanks to many risk-taking entrepreneurs. So it’s the ideal spot for Startup Scaleup, sponsored by JumpStart Inc, which gives would-be business owners and those looking to grow their businesses a chance to connect with and learn from local doers and success stories.

The all-day event features 29 panels, forums and speakers at different venues in the area, along with a pitch contest in which participants have the chance to win $5,000 to launch their idea or take it to the next level. It takes place Wed 6/17.

For over 140 million years, these were the largest beasts to have trod the earth.

Listen as Dr. Michael Ryan, curator of vertebrate paleontology, known worldwide for discovering a dinosaur a year, walks us through The World’s Largest Dinosaurs at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History through 1/6/16. http://www.CMNH.org.

What are you going to do with the kids all summer long that’s not going to shrink their college funds? All over town, east, west and south, organizations like LAND studios, the Cleveland Metroparks and various cities are planning fun things for kids to do that don’t cost anything.

If your particular kid likes movies, art, sports or ice cream, you’ll find something on this round-up, compiled by CoolCleveland’s Sarah Valek to stave off the moans of “There’s nothing to do.”
