There’s something innately romantic and nostalgic about fireflies, or lightning bugs, those twinkling critters that come out at dusk in the summer. Many of us remember trying to catch them in jars as kids or just watching them flit across the lawn while sitting on the front porch drinking cold lemonade. When my sister visited Cleveland from San Francisco one July a few years back, one of the things she wanted to do was sit outside on the grass and watch them — you don’t find them in the city by the Bay.

Unfortunately, like a lot of creatures, they’re under threat and their populations are declining. One possible factor is the same as it is for many species: humans are stealing their habitat. It’s also been suggested that light pollution is a factor, with light from cars, homes, streetlights and businesses interrupting their flash patterns.

Want to learn more? Stop out at the Geauga Park District’s Observatory Park Shelter to learn about fireflies’ habits and to participate in a science project to help figure out what’s behind their population decline.

It’s free. Reserve your slot here.
