This year, instead of the Blossom Festival Band handling all the annual 4th of July pops concerts at Blossom Music Center, Cleveland Orchestra itself heads out to Blossom a little early (their actual summer season there opens 7/11) to do the two evenings prior to the holiday.
Their America the Beautiful program is similar to the free concert they’ll perform on Mall B in downtown Cleveland 7/1: Thomas Wilkins will conduct and tenor Nathan Gunn will join the orchestra for a program of Broadway and film tunes, light classics and American patriotic songs, culminating of course in — do I really need to tell you? — the 1812 overture and fireworks, weather permitting.
Tickets are $24-$89.
On the actual holiday, conductor Loras John Schissel and the Blossom Festival Band return in all their holiday glory for their Salute to America program. It’s loaded with Sousa marches, more Broadway and patriotic tunes, and an Armed Forces salute. Xylophone player Harold Summy will make his Blossom debut on this concert.
Tickets are … wait! Yes, they too will play the 1812 Overture to accompaniment of fireworks (weather permitting). Sheesh. People would probably ask for their money back if they didn’t play that darned RUSSIAN piece.
Tickets are $31-$49.
