Texas seems to have a virtually infinite supply of creative singer/songwriters who have their own distinctive ways of blending various types of American roots music into their finished work.

Ray Wylie Hubbard may not be a household name, but the 68-year old performer has been working the southwest U.S. music scene since the early ’70s, with a brief burst of success when country music performer Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his tune “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.”

Like many of his fellow Texas songwriters, he’s kept cranking out topnotch material without wider success, but much acclaim within the Americana/roots music community (and like many of them, battled alcoholism which held his career back for a while). He’s just released his 16th album The Ruffian’s Misfortune on his own Bordello label, featuring himself on slide guitar and his son Lucas along with Gabe Rhodes on twin lead guitars and leaning heavily on the blues side of his influences.

He’ll also soon be publishing his autobiography, A Life … Well, Lived, which promises to be a humorous rendering of his many ups and downs. Maybe he’ll share a couple of those stories when he performs at the Beachland Ballroom. Kelly Mickwee opens.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
