One of the great things Nighttown does in addition to booking its schedule of national and international jazz artists (as well as some of the best local musicians) is giving students the opportunity to perform.
University School’s jazz ensembles, led by David Kay who is also on the jazz faculty of the noted Interlochen Arts Camp, have developed a reputation for the high quality of their work and the success of their members in bing accepted to elite music colleges. The groups include the 1:00 Jazz Ensemble, a big band; the small 2:00 Jazz Ensemble ranging from 5-13 players; and the elite Jazz Combo, with members chosen from the 1:00 group. The groups not only play challenging music that’s not standard for most young jazz ensembles, they also write and arrange their own pieces.
All thee groups will perform at Nighttown. Admission is $10.
