Interest in the paranormal and the mystical magical seems to be at an all-time high.

Sure, a remake of ‘80s classic Poltergeist is due out this summer, and television show Ghost Hunters draws in viewers, but there’s something going on with the Kent Stage that continues to attract the curious.

The Kent Paramormal Weekend took place a couple of months ago, and now the same organizers are hosting the the Mystical Magical Psychic Fair, also at the Kent Stage, which was built in 1927. Perhaps they’re hoping those interested in the afterlife say, “Zoinks Scooby, let’s all get in the Mystery Machine and go to Portage County.”

Cool Cleveland talked to event presenter and psychic medium Laura Lyn about the upcoming spooky affair.

Tell us about the the Mystical Magical Psychic Fair.

This is our second year. Normally at typical fairs what we would do is have readers there, and people would receive their readings. That’s a lot of fun. We have lectures going on all during the day so that when people are waiting for their reading they have somebody interesting to listen to. And some of the people that will be speaking are going to be very interesting. But this year we’re adding a séance to it.

Just for clarification, how is the Kent Paramormal Weekend different from the Mystical Magical Psychic Fair.

At the Paranormal Weekend, we’re focusing more on hauntings. At Psychic Fair, we’re focusing more on tapping into spirits, guides, angels and loved ones.

So the seemingly similar-minded events attract a different audience?

Yes, absolutely. It seems like people who are interested in the psychic essence tend to be more on the spiritual level where people who follow more of the paranormal tend to be on the scientific level.

This may be splitting hairs but aren’t the two interests basically the same?

That’s a complex question. I could go on for hours. I guess the best way to say it is, it’s more about your own perception, your own ideals, what you believe in, your values and your own inner truths. So you’re asking if it’s splitting hairs but what I feel is that this gives the audience — whether it be scientific or the more spiritual — something very interesting to look at with different concepts.

What’s up with the Kent Stage? Sure, there may have been a few artists over the years that died on stage but is the theater haunted?

Kent Stage to me is the most haunted building in Portage County. I feel because there have been so many performances over the years, people tend to just love it. There were a couple of people who passed away on the stage. The janitor passed and there was a body found within the building. There just seems to be a lot of history there that makes it a very interesting place for ghosts to stay and hang out.

What’s the biggest misconception you hear about being a psychic?

I always feel like they tend to believe that psychics should know everything or that we read people’s minds, and that’s not true. At least it hasn’t been my experience. I’m a psychic-medium, and I do not read minds. I’m reading the essences that I pick up around them through their spirit guidance. And we can’t know everything. We do the best we can from what we pickup but we’re not judging you and not looking at a person and knowing the bad things within them. We’re just looking at the highest potentials for the person.

You know, there’s a segment of the audience reading this article and rolling their eyes?

Sure. There always is and that’s fine. My thing is we’re all on our journey, and I have nothing to prove to anybody. It’s more about the message. I just don’t feel at all nervous about skepticism because I’m a strong skeptic myself on many things in life. So I’d say come in and enjoy it and see what you might learn. It’s an exploration. We’re trying to go on the theme of the Magical Mystical. What we’re bringing into this day, we’re asking all of the lecturers to help people discover magical things that happen every day. Things that can help people transcend or move forward. And this is so interesting. There are so many things in life that are mystical. Let’s enjoy it and have fun with it.

If Hollywood has taught us anything, the upcoming séance will result in tables levitating and people’s eyes rolling back in their heads as they talk in a ghostly howl.

No, I don’t perceive any of that. There might be some rapping. Sometimes a spirit will come through and bring some noises or things sometimes project like coins or buttons. Things like that do happen. I’m not going to say it’s going to happen here but those physical manifestations have been known to happen throughout séances but I don’t feel like it’s going to be anything that’s going to scare the audience.

Whew, our fear is having hundreds of gallons of blood rushing out of an elevator?

[laughs] No, that will not happen. In fact there is no elevator at Kent Stage. So I can sure you 100 percent there’s no blood coming out of an elevator.

Admission to the all-day Mystical Magical Psychic Fair is $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
