Shawn Colvin is best known to the casual folk music fan for her 1997 top 10 hit “Sunny Came Home,” certainly the pinnacle of her success. The song sagged the Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1998.

But Colvin had an active career before that song. She made her recording debut with 1989’s Steady On, coming to the attention of major label Columbia after spending the ’80s working the New York folk club and off-Broadway, performing with the Buddy Miller Band and touring with fellow folk-pop performer Suzanne Vega. She released two more albums before 1996’s platinum selling A Few Small Repairs, which contained “Sunny Came Home.

She parted ways with her major label — Columbia — in the early ’00 and now records for respected indie Nonesuch. Her recording output has slowed considerably, with only two studio albums since then, the most recent being 2012’s All Fall Down. In 2012, she published a book, Diamond in the Rough, which details some of the struggles that held her back.

But there’s no question that the work she’s been able to do is stellar, and fans will have the rare chance to hear her perform at the Music Box Supper Club, with rootsy folk performer Tom Brousseau opening. He’ll perform with singer/songwriter/ guitarist/fiddler/banjo player Andru Bemis.

Tickets are $42 in advance, $45 at the door.
