Experience the yin and the yang of our town by visiting both the Cleveland Asian Festival and the Hessler Street Fair on the same day. If you dare. Catch us at one or the other and make a cameo in our video. Now that the festival season is under way, follow CoolCleveland to stay in the loop week by week. It’s hard to believe Cleveland’s Asian presence once consisted of a block-long “Chinatown.” AsiaTown today is a riot of cultures, including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean and Vietnamese with restaurants like #1 Pho, featuring businesses of all types mostly owned by immigrant Clevelanders. Two large shopping plazas, Asia Plaza and the Asian Town Center, offer many shops and businesses in a single location. And AsiaTown overlaps the St. Clair/Superior Arts District, where arts businesses such as Zygote Press, the Cleveland Print Room and Morgan Art of Papermaking have set up shop. Visit CoolCleveland’s AsiaTown Cool Neighborhood for more permanent listings of restaurants, galleries and other cool destinations.

Visit this weekend to sample the neighborhood’s lively cultural and culinary offerings at the 6th annual Cleveland Asia Festival Sat 5/16 and Sun 5/17. CoolCleveland will be there shooting a video; catch us and you might make a cameo.

Chilean photographer Antonia Cruz came to Cleveland for a three-month residency as one of the artists hosted by the Cleveland Print Room as part of the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program. She took note of the city’s stubborn east side/west side divide and use it as material for the body of work she created here, using strands of hair provided by Clevelanders.

The resulting show, Remnants + Fragments, opens at the Cleveland Print Room with receptions Thu 5/14 & Fri 5/15.

The summer festival season gets in full swing with the Hessler Street Fair, a delightful anachronism amid the new development just a block away at University Circle’s Uptown. Eat wholesome local food and browse crafts made by Cleveland artisans; find out what area organizations are doing to build a better world; spend some time with your kids at the Harmony Park; and of course, listen to timeless music played by some of the best local rock, reggae, blues, folk, soul and world music from 11am to dusk Sat 5/16 & Sun 5/17. It’s a tie-dyed slice of the ’60s.

* Go hippie one day, go Asian the next. The Cleveland Asian Festival, now in its 6th year, offers a cultural experience fueled by Cleveland’s growing population from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan and other eastern countries. Food, music, dance, martial arts & more will be on tap Sat 5/16 & Sun 5/17.

* Check our popular 2015 Festival Calendar for more fun in the sun all year long!

CoolCleveland’s Alex Sukhoy, MBA, college instructor and career coach, reports on the event.

You might not think of nightclubs and yoga as a natural combination. But 50-75 people have been making the trip to the Music Box Supper Club for their sessions led by teachers from various area yoga studios. There’s plenty of room to spread out in the spacious club, and each session is followed by a mix-and-mingle period. This month, locally based Bearded Buch Kombacha will have their products available for sample and purchase. Fri 5/15.

LARCs are long acting reversible contraceptive methods; they are the most effective methods (>99%) because they last from 3 to 5 years without having to remember to take a daily pill or fill a prescription. They are the preferred method among OB/GYNs for their own contraception, and recommended as first line birth control for most women, including teenagers, who are sexually active and want to prevent pregnancy. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act – LARC methods are now available to all insured women without a cost share (FREE!). For more information about LARCs, visit: Bedsider.org.

In honor of National Infrastructure Week, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District allowed CoolCleveland access to explore their newly constructed Easterly Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station in Bratenhal. Once complete the station will house huge water pumps that will be able to draw more than 160 million gallons of waster water daily.

CoolCleveland’s Marty Bielat put on a hardhat and descended over 200ft into the station’s chambers to get the scoop from the site’s Program Manager, Doug Gabriel. The pump station will eventually pump water stored in the Euclid Creek and Dugway Storage tunnels to help prevent combined sewer overflow.

The Beautification Police

One sure way to gain the enmity of some of your neighbors — and get branded as a busybody — is to launch a one-man cleanup campaign around the community. Some folks reason it’s none of my — or anyone else’s — business if they allow the grass to grow knee-high in their yards. But they are wrong, for two reasons …

* Broken Trust Nineteen-year-old James E. Henderson was recently arrested and charged for particularly heinous murders committed in November of 2014. If you recall, a masked gunman barged into an E. 92nd Street home and opened fire …
