Social Equity

We’ve always believed you can do more just by taking your community into account with every step you take.

It’s not hard. Or even expensive. Graham Vesey & Marika Shioiri-Clark have hit upon a simple but effective way to turn 20 bucks into positive change with their new thing called Cleveland SOUP. AkronCAMP encourages adults to explore their bucket list and learn to act, play music, or paint, and make their community a little more artistic. CPT unfolds the life of Johanna Orozco, who has turned her own tragedy into advocacy for other young women in abusive relationships.

Local comedy alights at the Bop Stop, Clevelander Dillon Devito appears at Mahall’s with his band Hollis Brown, and Pecha Kucha arrives at MOCA with 10 rapid-fire presentations guaranteed to impact your community.

Ready to generate some social equity of your own? Art Fur Animals raises funds for our furry companions, you can run or walk a 5K to help house the homeless, while North Collinwood resident Emily Marti successfully uses Indiegogo to fund the Lakefront Literacy Project, offering a library of rotating reading material at Euclid Beach Park. And if you’re ready for the best internship of your life, then CoolCleveland might be just the thing to change your life for the better. –Thomas Mulready

Akron vocalist Tracey Thomas had a concept for an arts center where adults could fulfill their lifelong dreams of learning to paint, act or play music. Her idea has become a reality in the Akron Center for Art, Music & Performance aka AkronCAMP. There’ll be kids classes too but the school/performance space is aimed at “bucket listers,” she says.

Bring the whole family to see the space and meet the faculty when AkronCAMP hosts an all-day arts festival/open house Sat 5/30.

Usually applying for grants is a complex and time-consuming process, even when a group needs just a little money. Two Hingetown pioneers, Graham Veysey and Marika Shioiri-Clark, came up with a way to make it less forbidding with Cleveland SOUP.

It’s part social event, part project pitch, with each attendee kicking in $20 while groups and individuals compete to win the pot. Next event up is Thu 5/28.

Plain Dealer reporter Rachel Dissell’s series on Johanna Orozco, a teenager shot in the face by an abusive boyfriend, attracted a lot of attention. For those who wondered whatever happened to Johanna, Cleveland Public Theatre answers that question in its new production Johanna Facing Forward, which details how Johanna not only survived and thrived but also became an advocate for other young women in abusive situations.

It opens Thu 5/28 and runs through Sat 6/13.

After several dark years, the Bop Stop has burst into new life under the auspices of the Music Settlement. And while music – especially jazz – is still a primarily focus, they’ve been working to diversify the way the beautifully laid-out space is used.

One of the things they’ve done is hook up with the Cleveland Comedy Festival to run monthly showcases of local comedy talent. The next, Cleveland Comedy Fest Favorites, is Wed 6/3.

Geneva-On-The-Lake, less than an hour east of Cleveland, welcomes the young and old, bicyclists and motorcyclists, families and singles, reunions, anniversaries and honeymooners.

CoolCleveland selects the highlights of this not-so-hidden gem on the shores of Lake Erie.

From golf courses and mini-golf to lakefront cottages and lodges, from first-class wineries to vintage burger joints, from amusement parks to RV & camping resorts, Geneva-On-The-Lake is a pocket-sized paradise with something for just about everyone.

Friends of the Cleveland Kennel’s annual benefit Art Fur Animals has become one of the best parties of the year, uniting artists and animal lovers, who are often the same person. Artists embellish ceramic dogs that are auctioned off, while others contribute art – some animal-related, some not – for the silent auction. Sometimes even dogs attend! But look out – they’ll be promoting animals available for adoption, and in this crowd, they may find takers! (Look in CoolCleveland’s ShopLOCAL guide under Pets for pet local shops.)

It takes place this year at Hotcards’ Red Space Gallery on Sat 5/30.

Even if you have a regular yoga studio that’s a perfect fit for you, sometimes it’s a change of scenery is good – especially when that change means outdoors just as the Cleveland weather is getting perfect. And where better to feel at [eace with your inner spirit than next to Cleveland’s greatest natural asset, Lake Erie?

Join various local yoga instructors each Tuesday starting 6/2 at Voinovich Park for a free 45-minute session.

Summer is the perfect time to relax and kick back with a good book, especially for kids since it’s been learned that kids without access to summer enrichment programs often lose months of learning over the summer. The Lakefront Literacy Project aims to combine summer fun and reading with its Saturday lending library and literary events at Euclid Beach.

To launch its first season, the project will host a kick-off party with crafts, a science fiction talk and free pizza and cake on Sat 5/30.
