The Sultans of String may be from the Great White North aka Canada, but they draw on the musical heat of warmer climates. Band founder/leader Chris McKhool grew up with Middle Eastern music thanks to his Lebanese and Egyptian background and the band is based in Toronto, North America’s #1 melting pot city.
He expanded his interests to include music from eastern Europe, Cuba, India and Spain; flamenco, gypsy jazz and Cuban brass music all figure in somewhere to create a boiling, roiling stew of energetic world music. The ensemble, formed slightly more than a decade ago, has snagged a long list of honors and awards in its native country.
They’ll perform at Nighttown. Tickets are $20.
