Cleveland’s Dobama Theatre’s final play of the season Superior Donuts premieres Fri 4/24 @ 7:30 p.m. The area’s newest Equity Theatre and only Small Professional Theatre, Dobama’s historical success of bringing contemporary plays by emerging playwrights in professional productions of the highest quality is contributing to the growth of the performing arts in our area. Through educational and outreach programming, Dobama Theatre nurtures the development of theatre artists and builds new audiences for the arts while provoking an examination of our contemporary world. This is evidenced with the artists, direction and production in this work.
Superior Donuts was written by Tracy Letts, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner, and directed by Nathan Motta, longtime member of Dobama’s staff. Nathan Motta is the 5th Artistic Director at Dobama Theatre and has directed many mainstage productions and theaters including the Cleveland Play House. A professional director, conductor, music director and composer/lyricist, Mr. Motta holds a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.M. from the Eastman School of Music. Superior Donuts brings together a cast of seasoned professionals from the area for this comedy-drama by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Letts. Letts explores the challenges of accepting the past, embracing the present, and facing the future through the redemptive power of friendship. The play’s storyline and theme offer a similarity to the current changes in Cleveland as the new generation of take hold of the city’s long established businesses and institutions and the winds of change are felt.
Arthur Przybyszewski owns a decrepit donut shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. This comedy-drama by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize–winning author Tracy Letts explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship. -Rosalie Daley
