Mary Chapin Carpenter began her musical career in Washington D.C-area folk clubs before releasing her debut album Hometown Girl in 1987. She had some success in the country market for a few years, winning several Academy of County Music and Country Music Association awards at a time when country briefly opened a window to artists who didn’t fit a strict mold, something Carpenter with her strong singer/songwriter leaning did not. However, she earned widespread respect as a songwriter with singers like Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Cyndi Lauper and Mary Black covering her tunes and demonstrated their universal applicability.
Carpenter is currently in the midst of a tour with an acoustic trio, all the better to keep the focus on the fine songs. She’ll perform at Trinity Cathedral as part of Cathedral Concerts series. Tickets are $62.50.
