The actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions take place this year at Cleveland’s Public Hall, as part of its every-three-years rotation. (We won’t get into why the Rock Hall is the only Hall of Fame we’ve ever discovered that doesn’t host its own inductions every year). Of course, that’s been sold out for a while, but there are ways you can still take part.
As usual, the Rock Hall itself will be hosting its annual live simulcast party, so you can see the entire thing in its unedited glory, with industry types thanking every record guy they’ve met in the last 40 years and people milling around and schmoozing between segments. But that’s OK. You can actually have more fun than the peasants in the balcony at Public Hall because for the price of your $22 ticket, you also get to tour the Rock Hall exhibits which will be open that evening. There’ll be full bar refreshments and concessions available for purchase too.
One of the exhibits you’ll want to check out is the newly installed one dedicated to this year’s inductees whom you’ll get to see ushered in on those giant screens. The list: Ringo Starr, to be inducted by Paul McCartney; Bill Withers, inducted by Stevie Wonder; Lou Reed, inducted by Patti Smith; the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, inducted by Peter Wolf; Green Day, induced by Fall Out Boy; Stevie Ray Vaughan (pictured), inducted by John Mayer; the 5 Royales, inducted by Steve Cropper; and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, inducted by Miley Cyrus. Yeah, that last one has stirred plenty of online controversy, which is probably just what the Rock Hall induction planners wanted.
Performers at the ceremony you’ll get to watch at the simulcast include Gary Clark Jr., Zack Brown, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, Nate Ruess of Fun, Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, Tom Morello, John Legend and of course, Stevie Ray’s brother, no slouch himself, Jimmie Vaughan.
