Kent/Akron-area folk rockers the Speedbumps celebrated the release of their fourth album Soil to the Seed with a show at the Beachland Ballroom packed with friends and fans. The group, whose music on record has a delicate, intimate feel, pulled out all the stops for the lie show, augmenting the six-person lineup with a keyboard player and, on some tunes, a reed player, a small string section and some blazing electric guitar from rocker Ray Flanagan. Lead singer/songwriter Erik Urycki mostly played acoustic guitar himself, but picked up the electric on one song, claiming it was the first time he’d played it onstage. As usual, one of the highlights was the vocal interplay between Urycki and back-up vocalist/guitarist/banjo player Abby Luri which gave the music an ineffable sweetness.
