Love and Food

Let’s just assume we all love each other. Better yet, let’s assume we all need to eat. And hunger is all around us, in the city, in the suburbs. Jason Weiner is doing something about it with All You Need Is Love (And Food), a mini-Beatles fest to benefit Trinity Lakewood Community Outreach, and their hot meal program.

We love the way Jeff Blanchard keeps his comedy mojo alive. After founding 2 improv groups, this week he performs at the Comedy Improv Alliance. This week’s Pecha Kucha focuses on food, and Ramp Up Peninsula honors the humble ramp. We love sneaking you into Near West Theatre’s new space, on the eve of their first production. And while KSU is building a new Center for Visual Arts, we clue you in on the benefit auction that will help pay for it.

Celebrate Arbor Day all over town all week. Go on a literary bar crawl. Or swing dancing in the Slovenian Workman’s Home. How about a Party for the Planet or Poetry in the Woods? How ready are you for a killer internship this summer? Because CoolCleveland would love to have you.–Thomas Mulready

When Italian Joe DiMaggio and Jew Hank Greenberg became superstars in baseball in the 1930’s and 40’s, no one did more to change our attitudes about what it means to be an American.

Ever since OneCommunity’s [R]IoT Regional Summit, big data has been the hot topic of conversation for the past couple weeks. With such an infinite idea, obviously there’s tons of ground to cover. However, a unique perspective was brought to CoolCleveland’s attention by Matt Hoover, from Embedded Planet.

Embedded Planet specializes in the extraction of data collected by utilities, like medical devices, pumps or sensors. Turning data from intangible, to tangible is the name of their game, and Matt was certainly excited to share his company’s prospects at the luncheon. Check out the CoolCleveland exclusive video, and catch up on the topics!

He founded Cabaret Dada and Something Dada Improv Comedy. He worked his way up slowly, until he until headlined at The Cleveland Improv.

Born in Israel to Ethiopian Jewish refugees, singer Ester Rada grew up in a whirlwind of culture influences. After finishing a mandatory tour in the Israeli army, she worked as an actress, then returned to her first love: music. Rada cites strong influences from early 20th century soul power women Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin, as well as more contemporary black divas including Eryka Badu, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott.

Described as “gracefully combining Ethio-Jazz funk, soul and r&b, with mixed undertones of black grooves,” Tri-C JazzFest celebrates International Jazz Day Thu 4/30 by bringing Rada’s world sound to the Hanna Theatre.

Follow along (if you can) as Near West Theatre’s Artistic Director Bob Navis walks us through their amazing new theatre in Gordon Square.

Along the way, he discusses his process in working with folks of all ages from around the region to discover their own voice, and create meaningful art that helps us define who we are as a community.

Kent State University is building a new Center for the Visual Arts to house all of the art disciplines under one roof for the first time in KSU history. To help raise funds, there will be a series of art auctions to assist with rasiing money for the new project, which means you can contribute and be part of this history making event, staring at William Busta Gallery on Thu 4/23.

“In addition to donations from current School of Art faculty members such as Martin Ball, Gianna Committo, Paul O’Keefe, Michael Loderstedt, Darice Polo, there are some pieces being included from the School’s permanent collection, including a Calder, two Lichtensteins, an Andy Warhol and a Rauschenberg,” says Jenifer Warren, associate director of Advancement of KSU’s College of the Arts. “Additional pieces are also from School of Art emeriti faculty such as Cleveland Arts Prize winner Brinsley Tyrell and Arts Prize winner alumna Liz Maugans of Zygote Press.

We’ve been interested lately by the ‘Maverick Phenomenon’ in ballet. Ballet dancers — sometimes celebrated ones — leave some big-ass ballet company where they’ve been variously over-worked, under-utilized, or just bored-to-death and go to work with some little tiny ensemble of 10 or fewer dancers.

April 14 was a national day of action as groups from coast to coast, in cities both large and small, turned out to express their outrage at the continued street executions by cops of unarmed citizens …
