Jazz Singer Madeleine Peyroux Comes to @KentStage

MadelinePeyroux

Sun 4/19 @ 8PM

Jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux has an alluringly sultry voice that draws from the tradition of the French pop chanteuse as well as jazz, folk and blues artists like Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Serge Gainsbourg and Leonard Cohen. She combines the simplicity and directness of folk with the flexibility and elegance of jazz.

She’s spent a considerable amount of time busking in the streets of Paris, and although she released six well-regarded albums between 1996 and 2013, she’s generally kept a low profile. She’s acquiring a loyal cultish following, much of it on the basis of the 2004 Rounder Records album Careless Love, which featured distinctive treatments of tunes by Cohen, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and Elliott Smith. Lately she’s moved into writing most of her material. She’s got a “Best of” album released late last year for those who may have missed out on her and want to catch up.

She’ll be at the Kent Stage. Tickets are $31-$48.
