Jazz/world music percussionist and native Clevelander Jamey Haddad may have moved back to his hometown in 2004, following a 25-year residency in New York. But his perspective is still global. He recently returned home from a two-and-a-half month tour of Australia and Europe with his long-time employer Paul Simon.

When he’s not on the road, he’s teaching at Oberlin where he’s a professor of percussion and improvisation. And he’s always indulging his passion for creating new instruments; he claims to have more than 1,000 percussion instruments in his Oberlin basement.

Given all the claims on his time, it’s a treat to be able to hear him perform in northeast Ohio. He’ll perform Friday in Cleveland at the Music Box Supper Club and Saturday in Akron at BluJazz+. He’ll be joined by acoustic bassistRoberto Occhipinti, pianist Sullivan Fortner and reeds player Billy Drewes. Music Box tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door; Blu Jazz+ admission is $15.
