Former Beachwood resident Marc Cohn, who moved to L.A. when he was in college, transferring form Oberlin to UCLA, doesn’t tour all that much anymore. His career pretty much peaked at its onset, with the hit tune “Walking in Memphis,” from his self-titled 1991 platinum debut album. He won the Grammy for Best New Artist, often considered a curse that leads to the relative oblivion Cohn has been consigned to. He never had another hit of that magnitude.

But that compelling song, which explored the life-changing spiritual power of music, has had a long afterlife. His output since then has been sparse. His last album was 2010’s Listening Booth 1970 featuring covers of songs that were out that year, which he considered a formative year in his musical development. They range from Cat Stevens’ “Wild World,” to Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” to Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “Tears of a Clown.” He did, however, recently release a new original tune, “The Coldest Corner in the World.”

And he’s making a return visit to Cleveland (he was here last October at the Music Box Supper Club) in a whole new venue: Trinity Episcopal Cathedral downtown across from the Cleveland State campus where a new series called “Cathedral Concerts” has been taking place since last year. It’s an awe-inspiring environment for a gifted and thoughtful singer and songwriter.

Tickets are $50.
