There was a time, back in 1972 when her debut album Whatever’s for Me was released, when many music observers thought Joan Armatrading could be the next Joni Mitchell — an artist with a highly distinctive voice who used an acoustic folk base to take off on adventurous vocal and songwriting flights that were challenging, thrilling and often revelatory.

But though the English singer/songwriter had some British gold albums in the late ’70s and early ’80s, that big breakthrough never came. Instead she’s released occasional albums through the ’90s and ’00s and mostly been absent from concert stages. And she’s saying her current solo tour — just herself and guitar — will be her last. Whether that’s true or not, if you ever loved her music, it’s good to catch her while you can.

She’ll be at the Kent Stage. Tickets are $50-$65.
