The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary by announcing its new artistic director, chosen from its own ranks: trombonist/arranger Paul Ferguson, director of the jazz studies program at Case Western Reserve University. He was selected following a nationwide search to succeed trumpeter Sean Jones who has led the group for the last five years.

“Paul embodies all of the qualities the search committee had identified for our next Artistic Director,” said Joel Brotman, who headed up the search committee. “Paul’s dedication to the band, to Cleveland, and to jazz as both a historic and ever-evolving art form were unmatched by any other candidate.”

Its season-closing concert at PlayhouseSquare’s Hanna Theatre, “CJO Celebrates 30: Yesterday, Today & Forever,” will feature favorite musicians, arrangers and compositions form the group’s past and introduce new players who could be part of the group’s future. It will also be Sean Jones’ final bow with the group.

“We are very excited about the next 30 years and feel that Paul’s vision will further CJO’s mission and impact on jazz and in the community,” said CJO executive director Colleen Sherman. “Next season promises to be our best yet!”

Tickets are $25-$50.
