In 2009, British tenor Ian Bostridge sang an excerpt from Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem at Westminster Abbey to mark the passing of the last veterans of World War I that year. That piece, with the lyrics taken from Wilfred Owen’s “At a Calvary Near the Ancre,” was inspired by the atrocities of that war

That war will be evoked in the program Bostridge sings at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights, presented by the Cleveland Chamber Music Society. It’s called “The Music and Poetry of the Great War,” put together to mark the 100th anniversary of the onset of WWI last year. It includes music by Britten, Gustav Mahler, Kurt Weill, George Butterworth and Rudi Stephan.

He’s currently touring the program, along with Chinese-Canadian pianist Wenwen Du.cThere’ll be a pre-concert lecture at 6:30pm.

Tickets are $30.
