Austin-based trio Hot Club of Cowtown borrowed its name from the Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli ensemble Hot Club of France which made a splash in Paris in the ’30s. Combining that ensemble’s groundbreaking “gypsy jazz” with the Western swing of Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, which took the western half of the U.S. by storm in the late ’30s and ’40s.
With Elana James on violin and vocals, Whit Smith on guitar and vocals and Jake Erwin on double bass, the band kicks out a lot of sound for their limited numbers. Their latest album, 2013’s Rendezvous in Rhythm, is packed with jazz and swing standards, which the band uses as platforms to take off into lively flights of improvisation.
The group will be performing at the Music Box Super Club. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door.
