Actors & Percussionist Animate Ancient Epic of Gilgamesh @LakewoodLibrary

Gilgamesh

Thu 4/23 @ 7PM

Gilgamesh was an early Mesopotamian ruler whose legend spawned what’s considered to be the earlier major literary work, the Epic of Gilgamesh, written more than four millennia ago. It depicted the king as a demigod, whose adventures and feats were celebrated in poetry.

Now the members of WordStage, who specialize in animating written works of literature and history through staged readings at churches, cemeteries, senior centers and libraries are tackling this work, with five actors portraying the various human and supernatural characters.

Since there’s no way of knowing what music of 2500 b.c. sounded like, Cleveland-based percussionist Paul Stranahan has used his imagination to conceive of music to accompany the performance which takes place at Lakewood Public Library’s main branch.

It’s free.
