West Virginia’s @HillbillyGypsies Play Traditional Bluegrass at Peninsula’s G.A.R. Hall

HillbillyGypsies

Sat 3/21 @ 8PM

Bluegrass originally came out of the mountains of the U.S. mid-south region where it was once a regional curiosity. Today it’s been embraced by younger musicians across the country — as well as its own backyard.

The Hillbilly Gypsies come from West Virginia, long a stronghold of bluegrass. Formed in 2001 in Morgantown, the group is fronted by Trae and Jamie Lynn Buckner, who trade lead and harmony vocals, while Trae plays violin and banjo. They’re joined by fiddle player Ty Jaquay, acoustic bass player Ryan Cramer and guitar/mandolin/banjo player Dave Asti to make music in the traditional style: all acoustic, drum-free and heavy on fancy pickin’ and multi-voice harmonies.

That music has earned the band a full calendar of appearances at major bluegrass and folk festivals, while the Buckners have done some advance work, playing gigs overseas where they hope to spread word about bluegrass. Meanwhile, they’ll be in our backyard, at the G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula as part of its Voices in the Valley series.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
