Virginia’s @CarbonLeaf Blends Folk Styles @KentStage

CarbonLeaf

Fri 3/27 @ 8PM

For a band that’s been playing for more than 20 years and has almost a dozen albums out, Richmond, Virginia’s Carbon Leaf is relatively unknown. But the quintet built a stalwart fan base in the folk/Americana scene before starting to get some national attention in the early ’00s.

Adding a dollop of Celtic music to the Appalachian folk that grew from British Isles music and tracing its path through traditional country music, the band plays what it calls “ether-electrified porch music.” Carbon Leaf’s five members add instruments like mandolin, accordion and fiddle to the standard rock band format, creating music that’s both high-energy and folksy.

Their last new album was 2013’s Constellation Prize. But last year they did something a little offbeat. They rerecorded their 2004 album Indian Summer as Indian Summer Revisited because their former label owns the original masters but the band owns the rights to the material. And obviously in ten years, they had time to think of a few things they wishes they’d done differently.

Carbon Leaf will be back at the Kent Stage for an evening of their rustic-meets-urban country folk. Tickets are $16 in advance, $21 at the door.
