While Robert Cray is not some old blues man from the south side of Chicago or the Mississippi Delta, he put in his time before he became an “overnight” success in 1987 when his fourth album, Strong Persuader, hit the Billboard top 20 and produced a major rock hit “Smoking Gun.”
He made all the right friends, from Keith Richard to Eric Clapton, to get himself in the right showcase situations. And, blues being the stalwart and untrendy music it is, he has maintained a steady career with albums like clockwork about every two years and regular touring.
