POLKA PIRATES

Sun 3/29 @ 7PM

The Polka Pirates are part of a new wave of bands keeping alive one of Cleveland’s bedrock musical traditions — one that put it on the charts before rock & roll was a gleam in anyone’s eye. Back in the ’40s, Frankie Yankovic, who sprang from Collinwood’s Slovenian community, had a couple of million-selling hits and became known as the Polka King with his cheerful accordion and unflagging grin.

His generation has mostly passed, though they are memorialized at the Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid, which you should definitely visit if you haven’t been.

But groups like the Polka Pirates are a living tribute to music that acquired a reputation for being the happiest music in the world. And they don’t restrict themselves to polkas, even though they play all the major polka styles — Slovenian, Polish and German. If you can dance to it, they’ll play it.

They’ll be doing two sets of toe-tapping music at the Music Box Supper Club.

Admission is $7 and that includes a specialty craft cocktail as well.
