The @MivosQuartet Plays New Music @TransformerStat

MIvos

Sat 3/28 @ 7:30PM

The Mivos Quartet may look at a glance like an ordinary string quartet — two violins, viola, cello.

But the group, formed in 2008, focuses strictly on the modern and contemporary when it comes to their repertoire, playing works of both established avant-garde contemporary composers and brand-new works they’ve commissioned from younger composers on the leading edge of contemporary classical music, often working in close collaboration with those composers. In addition, they’re committed to exploring multimedia projects, working with electronics, performing improvised music, and playing for non-traditional audiences.

When they come to Cleveland to perform at the Transformer Station, they’ll be playing a string quarter by 79-year-old Helmut Lachenmann, one of the pioneers of musique concrete, which works with electronically altered sound elements. The other two piece on the program are by young composers, both under 40: Alex Mincek’s String Quarter #3 and Martin Stauning’s Atmende Steine.

Tickets are $22.
