So what is a “hackathon”? It’s really just an open-ended, collaborative project, sort of a hands-on brainstorming session for software developers. But the term has been appropriated to apply to such activities that don’t necessarily have to do with computing at all.

For instance, the Call to All: Art & Music Hackathon taking place at Mahall’s invites anyone who would like to join others in spontaneous creative projects to be part.

“You do not have to be a genius programmer, or a renowned artist or musician to be a part of this hackathon,” they say. “All you need to bring to the table is an open mind, a willingness to work with others and the courage to step out of your comfort zone. Remixing a song, creating a collage, painting your keys different colors with nail polish—these are all hacks. We are looking for people who want to come up with a project idea and breathe it to life within 24 hours. Make something awesome, and do it together.”

The session will kick off with registration and meet-and-greet from 6-7PM and guest speakers from 7-9PM including percussionist Peter Ferry, of the New Yotk-based multimedia new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, who will talk about interactive music.

The event is free.

Mahall’s will also host an afterparty  for Case Western Reserve University’s think[box] Cleveland Arduino Day celebration. That event takes place at CWRU’s think[box] facility at 2123 MLK Drive in University Circle from 10am-3:30pm. This one is a little more technically minded, and involved working on projects using Arduino hardware and software, but it’s free and open to anyone who is curious. Learn more here.
