Rossini’s 1819 opera, La Donna del Lago (Lady of the Lake), was based on a Sir Walter Scott poem of a few years earlier. It offers a romanticized version of Scottish medieval history involving war, a king in disguise and a maiden torn between the man she loves and the one she’s betrothed to — in other words, typical opera plotting.
In the Metropolitan Opera’s current production, superstar mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato sings the title role, with tenor Juan Diego Flórez the king who pursues her.
It will be broadcast to movie theaters across the country as the next production in the Met Live in HD series, witn an encore broadcast the following Wednesday.
Tickets are $23. Go here for locations and reservations.
